SUMMARY:American Archaeology: The Past\, Present\, and Future of the Past
DESCRIPTION:Archaeology Café · Archaeology Southwest\n \n\n American Archaeology: The Past\, Present\, and Future of the Past\n \n\n Archaeology has captured the American imagination for generations\, but how much of what we think we know about it comes from myth\, movies\, and misconceptions? Researcher\, author\, conservationist\, and cultural preservationist R. E. Burrillo takes us behind the scenes to explore archaeology’s evolution from collecting and exploration into a science\, while confronting its complicated ties to nationalism\, colonialism\, exploitation\, and cultural preservation. Through lively stories of discovery\, controversy\, and life in the field\, Burrillo invites us to look at archaeology with fresh eyes. Together\, we’ll consider not only what the past can teach us\, but who gets to tell its stories\, who benefits from them\, and what archaeology can become in the future.\n \n\n \n Free presentation\n \n \n October 15\, 2026\n \n \n Presentation · 6:00–7:30 PM\n \n\n \n\n\n Plan your evening\n \n\n\n\n 6:00–7:30 PM\n \n\n Archaeology Café Presentation\n \n\n Take a behind-the-scenes look at archaeology through stories of discovery\, controversy\,\n and life in the field with R.E. SUMMARY:Roots We Water: An Immersive Art Installation
DESCRIPTION:Traveling Exhibit · Presented by Cahokia PHX\n \n\n Roots We Water: An Immersive Art Installation\n \n\n Roots We Water is a multidisciplinary immersive installation that centers Indigenous identity\, sovereignty\, and self-determination as living\, inseparable forces — expressed through large-scale canvas\, projection\, and the material knowledge of four Native artists working in collective declaration. The installation occupies space as an act of cultural assertion. To enter is to step into a field of memory\, resistance\, and continuity — where the land is not a backdrop but a subject\, and water is not a resource but a relative. See this special traveling exhibit at SVM during our regular museum hours on Saturday 10/10 (9:00 am – 4:00 pm) and Sunday 10/11 (12:00 pm – 4:00 pm).
